OUR MISSION
The mission of the YMCA is to build a healthy spirit, mind and body, in children and adults, through programs that foster caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
OUR AREAS OF FOCUS
- YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: Nurturing the potential of every child and teen.
- HEALTHY LIVING: Improving the nation’s health and well-being.
- SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Giving back and providing support to our neighbors.
WE’RE HERE FOR YOU
The Y works to provide opportunities for kids and families and to help them develop strong bodies, sharper minds and hopeful spirits. And in times of crisis, the Y is also here for you. From Homeless Shelter & affordable Housing, to Food insecurity, to Covid-19 emergency childcare, to supporting struggling youth, the Y answers the call to find solutions.
When you donate to the Y, you BUILD A BETTER US.
OUR THREE BRANCHES
Dear Members and Friends,
2024 was another year of strong growth and new opportunities for which we are so very thankful. It was because of your support that we’ve been able to thrive. We give thanks for:
- Continued participation growth. Our spaces were busier than ever as membership grew by 11% and adult fitness programs grew by 23%.
- To the State of Connecticut for $236,250 in Summer camp support so that more kids than ever could attend Y summer camps. To Kids of Summer Foundation for providing camperships for kids to our camps.
- To Kathleen and Ron Picard, Franklin Products, for their generous donation of 1.9 acres of the former Kelley Transportation property, on John and Church Streets, so the Y can create a new sports complex and youth activity center in the heart of Torrington.
- To Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, for partnering with the Y, so that a Cold Weather Shelter can operate in Torrington for years to come.
- To Gengras Subaru & Subaru America for partnering for 12 years with Share the Love support for total funds contributed of $434,548.
- To the Department of Housing for $300,000 in funding to replace the Winsted YMCA elevator and for a commitment to support the development of a new Y housing project.
- And to our committed staff who continued to go above & beyond in caring and serving our many members and program participants in so many compelling ways.
The following special projects were undertaken in 2024:
- At YMCA Tall Timbers Outdoor Center, home of Camp MOE, construction of Brookside Meadow, a 3-acre ball field, and Racoon Run Obstacle Course, were completed so that children have great spaces to run and play.
- Torrington Y Early Learning childcare center began a complete renovation project with $233,000 in funds from Local Initiatives Support Corporation.
- Numerous investments in HVAC and swimming pool mechanical systems at each or our locations to ensure our members have a comfortable atmosphere for workouts and recreation.
Finally, the Board of Directors conducted an extensive search for a replacement for retiring CEO Greg Brisco on March 31, 2025, which resulted in the appointment of Brian Ohler of Canaan. Brian started on February 3, 2025.
We’re so grateful that day in and day out, we have the privilege to serve our community in so many ways! Your support has helped the Y to reach so many more lives. Together, we are changing lives.
