About Us

OUR MISSION

The mission of the YMCA is to build a healthy spirit, mind and body, in children and adults, through programs that foster caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

OUR AREAS OF FOCUS

  • YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: Nurturing the potential of every child and teen.
  • HEALTHY LIVING: Improving the nation’s health and well-being.
  • SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Giving back and providing support to our neighbors.

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU

The Y works to provide opportunities for kids and families and to help them develop strong bodies, sharper minds and hopeful spirits. And in times of crisis, the Y is also here for you. From Homeless Shelter & affordable Housing, to Food insecurity, to Covid-19 emergency childcare, to supporting struggling youth, the Y answers the call to find solutions.

When you donate to the Y, you BUILD A BETTER US.

OUR THREE BRANCHES

Dear Members and Friends,

2023 was another year of strong growth and new opportunities for which we are so very thankful. It was because of your support that we’ve been able to thrive. We give thanks for:

  • Continued growing participation. Our spaces were busier than ever as membership grew by 26% and youth PE and adult fitness programs grew by 20%.
  • To LARC, for selling Camp MOE to the Y to ensure that the property will be enjoyed by children for generations to come.
  • To the State of Connecticut for $231,000 in Summer camp support so that more kids than ever could attend Y summer camps.
  • To the Office of Early Childhood for funds for childcare staff stipends and for renovations to our childcare center.
  • To Ron Picard, Franklin Products, for the official 15-year lease so the Y can create a new sports complex and youth activity center in the heart of Torrington.
  • To the Department of Housing and Hartford Healthcare, so that the Y could operate a Cold Weather shelter at the former Winsted Health Center.
  • To Northwest Community Bank Foundation, Torrington Savings Foundation, Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation and Draper Foundations for generous donations toward the Y’s charitable work.
  • To Gengras Subaru & Subaru America for a 11th year of Share the Love support. The over $17,000 proceeds, allowed us to add a drowning prevention system for the Torrington YMCA for the summer months.
  • To the City of Torrington for ARPA funds so that the Torrington Youth Service Bureau could mentor middle school students, operate the Teen Center during summer months and the Y can run a middle school afterschool program.
  • To the Towns of Harwinton, North Canaan and Winchester, Heidi and Chase Jespersen of Action Wildlife Foundation, John Auclair of Norbrook Farm Brewery, Nils Johnson of Little Red Barn Brewers and Matt Tkac of Bad Dog Brewery for their friendship and generosity in helping the Y to host events and raise funds.
  • To our hearty winter campers and supporters who supported the 12th Freezin’ for a Reason winter sleepout, collectively raised over $21,000 for the Y’s Winchester Emergency Shelter.
  • And to our committed staff who continued to go above & beyond in caring and serving our many members and program participants in so many compelling ways.

We’re so grateful for your this and more! Your support has helped the Y to reach so many more lives. Together, we are changing lives.
