Lifeguard Training & CPR Class

  • All Lifeguard Training Course participants, both recertification and new certifications, must complete an online course prior to participating in the in-person training sessions. The online portion will be emailed to all participants 1 week prior to the course and will take 6-9 hours to complete. If the online portion is not completed you will not be able to participate.
  • Please note that the email used to register for this course, should be the personal email of the participant. 
  • Red Cross requires that all participants be in possession of their own CPR face mask, lifeguard hip pack and whistle in order to complete the course. It is each participant’s responsibility to purchase these items.

 

  1. Lifeguard Certification participants must attend in-person training sessions that will take place Saturday and Sunday 7 am – 6 pm at the Torrington YMCA (259 Prospect Street, Torrington, CT).
  2. Lifeguard and Waterfront Skills Certification (if offered below) participants must attend in-person training sessions that will take place Saturday and Sunday 7 am to 6 pm at the Torrington Y and a 3rd day of training to take place at a waterfront location the following weekend.
  3. Lifeguard Recertification (if offered below) participants must hold a current certification or one expired by no more than 30 days. Participants will attend a one day in-person training session at the Torrington Y from 7 am – 5 pm.

 

  • All participants must be able to complete a swimming test consisting of a:
    • 150 yard swim (Freestyle AND breaststroke)
    • 2 minute water tread
    • 50 yard swim (Freestyle or breaststroke)
    • During the swim test participants must demonstrate proper freestyle and breaststroke techniques and goggles are permitted.
    • Swimming 20 yards to retrieve a 10lb object from the bottom of the pool (9ft deep)  and swimming back while holding the object on their chest. You will have 1 minute and 30 seconds to complete this test. (The use of goggles is NOT permitted, When swimming back with the object participant CAN NOT use their hands to swim)

 

  • When the online portion is completed and participants have attended both days of in-person training, passing the swim test and skill scenarios, that participant will have successfully completed the course and receive their Lifeguarding certification. These certifications are valid for 2 years.
  • Life Guarding classes are 2 days in duration. If you cancel prior to the start of the class, you will receive a refund minus a $50 fee. Once the class has begun, no refunds will be given.

Lifeguard Recertification Course

An abbreviated Lifeguarding course that briefly reviews course information and allows practice of skills and knowledge before testing. Current certification, or certification less than 30-days expired, in Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is required to participate in the review course. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED which is valid for 2 years.
